History of Waterford

Waterford, Connecticut, is located in New London County in the southeastern corner of the state. It is bordered by the Mystic River to the west and the Thames River to the east. The town was originally settled by the English in 1637 and was Incorporated in 1651.

The town is named after Waterford, Ireland, which is where many of the early settlers originated. Waterford was one of the first towns in Connecticut to be granted a royal charter, and it was also one of the first four towns to be established in the state.

The town grew steadily throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and by the mid19th century it was a thriving center of shipbuilding and whaling. Waterford was also known for its production of gunpowder during the Revolutionary War.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town began to decline economically, and many of the old shipyards and factories closed. However, Waterford has staged a comeback in recent years, and it is now a popular tourist destination. The town is home to several historical landmarks, including the Waterford Speedbowl, one of the oldest continuously operating auto racing tracks in the country.
