History of Alexander City

Alexander City, originally known as “Hillabee,” was founded in 1842 by Dr. Thomas Simpson Woodward, a physician from Georgia. Dr. Woodward came to the area to treat patients with malaria, which was prevalent in the area at the time. He built a cabin on the Tallapoosa River, which served as the first hospital in the area. Dr. Woodward eventually established a plantation and named it “Woodward’s Hill.”

In 1845, the Alabama Legislature created Tallapoosa County, and Hillabee was chosen as the county seat. The town was renamed “Alexander City” in honor of Dr. Woodward’s son, Alexander, who had died in 1842.

The city began to grow rapidly in the 1850s due to the discovery of gold in the area. A number of gold mines were established in the hills around Alexander City, and the population grew to over 1,000 by 1860.

The Civil War brought an end to the city’s growth, as the mines were closed and many of the residents left to join the Confederate Army. After the war, the city slowly began to rebuild.

In the early 1900s, the city’s economy was revived by the construction of hydroelectric dams on the Tallapoosa River. The first dam, created in 1910, was named after Dr. Woodward. The dams provided electricity to the city and the surrounding area, and also created a number of jobs.

Today, Alexander City is a thriving community with a population of over 15,000. The city’s economy is still largely based on the hydroelectric dams, which provide power to the city and the surrounding area. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing plants, including Russell Corporation, which employs over 3,000 people.
