The area now known as Glendale, Arizona was originally inhabited by the Hohokam people. The Hohokam were a prehistoric Native American people who lived in the area from about 300 BC to 1450 AD. The Hohokam are known for their irrigation canals. Some of the canals built by the Hohokam are still in use today.
The first European settlers in the area were farmers from Mexico who arrived in the 1880s. They founded the towns of Glendale, Toshikito and Alhambra. Glendale was officially incorporated as a city in 1906.
