Jeanette Miller was born in Belgium in 1817. Her parents immigrated to the United States when she was just a child. They settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jeanette married John Wright in 1836. John Wright was a wealthy man and the owner of a successful glass factory.
In 1853, John Wright built a glass factory in Jeannette. The town became known as “The Glass City”. The Wright family was very important in the development of Jeannette.
In 1876, Jeannette was incorporated as a borough. In 1889, the borough was renamed “City of Jeannette” after its founder, Jeanette Wright.
