As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 59,403. The racial makeup of the city was 86.7% White, 5.1% Asian, 1.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.8% of the population.

History of Springfield (Oregon)
In the early 1850s, settlers began drifting into the fertile Willamette Valley in search of land to claim as their own. The valley was already home to the Kalapuya, a Native American tribe who had lived in the area for centuries. The new arrivals, mostly from the eastern United States, brought with them tales of a place called Springfield, back east, and decided to name their new town after it.
Springfield began as a small trading post near the confluence of the McKenzie and Willamette rivers. The community soon blossomed into a thriving farming town, with wheat and oats being the primary crops. In 1856, Springfield was designated as the county seat of Lane County.
With the coming of the railroad in the 1870s, Springfield’s fortunes changed again. The town became a stop on the Oregon & California Railroad, and a new influx of residents arrived, many of them associated with the railroad. The city continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, with the addition of new industries and businesses.
