History of New Kensington
New Kensington is a city in Pennsylvania. It was settled in the mid1700s by ScotchIrish immigrants. The city was named for Scotland’s Kenneth I, who united the Picts and Scots in the ninth century. New Kensington became a borough in 1891 and a city in 1924.
The first settlers in the area were probably Native Americans, who lived in small camps along the Allegheny River. The first European settler was John Frazier, who built a log cabin near the presentday site of the New Kensington Bridge in 1754. Frazier was followed by other ScotchIrish families, and by 1773 there were about 20 families living in the area.
In the early 1800s, the area was still mostly forests and farms. But the construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Allegheny Portage Railroad in the 1830s led to an influx of new settlers and businesses. The city grew rapidly, and by the mid1800s it was a major manufacturing center, with foundries, glass factories, and rolling mills.
The city continued to grow in the early 1900s, thanks to the development of the Alcoa aluminum plant and other industries. Today, New Kensington is a diverse city with a strong manufacturing base. It is home to more than 10,000 people.
