History of Florence (Alabama)
In the early 1800s, what is now the City of Florence was inhabited by Creek and Cherokee Indians. It was generally known as “the Shoals” because of its location on the Tennessee River. The first settler in the area was Johnathon Lyon, who operated a ferry service across the river. In 1818, Lyon constructed a log cabin near his ferry landing. He cleared land and farmed it, and he also operated a tavern and gristmill. Lyon’s tavern quickly became a gathering place for other settlers in the area.
In 1820, the United States government built a fort (named Fort Hampton) at the Muscle Shoals to help protect the settlers from the Indians. A small community developed around the fort. In 1823, Lyon donated land for a courthouse, and the community was named “Florence” in honor of his daughter.
The city of Florence was officially incorporated in 1826. By this time, it had a population of about 400. The first newspaper in Florence was published in 1828. A school was built in 1830.
Florence continued to grow in the 1830s and 1840s. A bridge was built across the Tennessee River in 1839, and more businesses and churches were established. In 1844, the city’s first bank was opened. The population of Florence reached 1,000 in 1850.
The American Civil War began in 1861, and Florence became an important military center for the Confederacy. Several manufacturing plants were built in the city to produce war supplies. Florence was also the site of a prison for Union soldiers.
The Union Army captured Florence in 1865, and the city was occupied by Union troops for the remainder of the war. After the war, many of the manufacturing plants closed. The city’s economy remained depressed for several years.

The Great Depression of the 1930s caused many of the cotton mills to close, and the city’s economy suffered. However, the city began to recover in the late 1930s, and the population reached 15,000 by 1940.
During World War II, Florence again became an important military center. Several military factories were built in the city, and the population grew to about 25,000.
After the war, the military factories closed, but Florence continued to grow. New schools and churches were built, and the city’s first mall was constructed in the 1970s. Today, Florence is a thriving city with a population of about 37,000. It is a center for industry, education, and culture in the Tennessee Valley region of Alabama.
