New London is a city located in the southernmost county of Connecticut in the United States. The city has a population of just over 27,000 people and is the 169th largest city in the country. New London is situated on the Thames River and is located about 60 miles southwest of Boston and 30 miles northeast of Hartford. The city is part of the New LondonNorwich metropolitan area which has a population of over 380,000 people.

New London was founded in 1646 by John Winthrop, Jr. and a group of settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The city was originally named Pequot after the Native American tribe that inhabited the area. The name was later changed to New London after Winthrop’s friend, Sir Richard Saltonstall, suggested it.

New London played an important role in the American Revolution as it was the site of the burning of the ships HMS Rose and HMS Nancy by the patriot Nathan Hale. This act prevented the British from using the harbor as a base for their operations.

The city is home to the United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College, Mitchell College, and the University of Connecticut at Avery Point. History of New London
