History of Brookline
Brookline, Massachusetts, is an affluent town in Greater Boston, bordered by Boston proper to the south and west, Cambridge to the north, and Newton to the west. It is notable for being one of the most socially liberal communities in the United States. It was founded on what was originally the western frontier of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638 and was incorporated as a town in 1705. Brookline was a part of Suffolk County until it was made a part of Norfolk County in 1793. The western part of Brookline separated from the rest of the town in 1810, forming the town of West Roxbury, and was annexed by Boston in 1874.
The land that is now Brookline was first settled by Algonquian Native Americans who inhabited the area for thousands of years prior to its European settlement. The first European settlers in the area were a group of Puritans from England who arrived in 1638 in search of religious freedom. They purchased the land from the Native Americans and founded the town of Cambridge. In 1660, the land that would become Brookline was given to the settlers of Cambridge as an outlying farming community. The settlers named it Muddy River because of its poor drainage. In 1705, the town wasincorporated as a separate entity from Cambridge and took its current name from the brooks that ran through the town.
The town of Brookline was predominantly rural until the mid19th century when urbanization began to take hold.
