History of French Lick
French Lick was originally a French trading post built near a spring and salt lick. The spring, which is still famous today, provided water for wildlife as well as the earliest settlers. The salt lick was a favorite place for animals to gather and was used by Native Americans and animals long before the first settlers arrived. The name “French Lick” has been used since the early 1800s.
The first permanent settlement in the French Lick area was established in 1811 by William Digby, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. In 1832, near the present site of the West Baden Springs Hotel, Dr. William Bowles built a health resort around a saline spring. The site became known as Sulphur Spring Health Resort and attracted many visitors.
In 1856, the West Baden Springs Hotel was built incorporating the existing saline springs. The hotel became a popular destination for travelers from all over the world and was known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1901 but was rebuilt in 1902 and reopened in 1903. The new hotel was even more grand than the original and featured a sixstory atrium that was the largest enclosed space in the world at that time.
The hotel was closed in 1932 during the Great Depression. The West Baden Springs Hotel was purchased by the state of Indiana in 1945 and was used as a state school for boys until 1974. The property was then sold to a private developer and the restored West Baden Springs Hotel reopened in 1986.
