West Lafayette is home to Purdue University, which was established in 1869 and is one of the nation’s leading research and landgrant universities. History of West Lafayette
West Lafayette is a city in Wabash Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,596 at the 2010 census. It is the most densely populated city in Indiana and is home to Purdue University.
The first inhabitants of the area that would become West Lafayette were the Miami tribe of Native Americans. The Miami occupied the area until the late 17th or early 18th century, when they were forced out by the Mississippians.
The Mississippians were the next group to occupy the area. They built a large village near the presentday campus of Purdue University. The village was inhabited until the mid19th century, when it was abandoned for unknown reasons.
The first European settlers in the area were French fur trappers, who arrived in the early 1800s. They built a small settlement near the Mississippian village.
In 1824, the Treaty of Saint Peters was signed between the United States and the Indian tribes of the Miami, Potawatomi, and Kickapoo. The treaty opened up the area for American settlement.
In 1828, James Franklin Doughty and eleven other men from Ohio founded the town of Lafayette. The town was named after the French general Marquis de Lafayette, who had helped the Americans during the Revolutionary War.
In 1832, William Digby and John Allison founded the town of West Lafayette on the other side of the Wabash River from Lafayette. The two towns later merged to form the presentday city of West Lafayette.
Purdue University was founded in 1869. The university has grown to become one of the largest in the United States, with an enrollment of over 40,000 students.
