Fort Dodge is located on the Des Moines River in northcentral Iowa. It was originally named Fort Clarke but was renamed for Maj. Gen. Grenville M. Dodge, who served as a Union Army general during the American Civil War and later as a U.S. Congressman from Iowa.

Maj. Benjamin Drake was sent to build a fort at the junction of the Des Moines and Racoon rivers in 1851, but it was not until 1856 that work began on Fort Clarke. It was named for Maj. Andrew Clarke, who had been stationed there earlier. The fort was completed in 1857, and it was used as a supply base during the American Civil War.

In 1865, the fort was renamed for Gen. Dodge, who had played a key role in its construction. In 1869, the fort was abandoned and the land was surveyed for a town. The first lots were sold in 1870, and the city of Fort Dodge was incorporated in 1874.
