The United States Census for 2010 reported the city’s population was 70,085. It is the principal city of the Muncie metropolitan statistical area, which has a population of 117,671.
Muncie is the home of Ball State University and the headquarters of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. The city is also the site of the annual Muncie Field Trial Clubs Dog Show, one of the nation’s oldest Field Trial events. The Lenape people, who were the area’s original inhabitants, founded several settlements along the White River including Munsee Town, near the site of presentday Muncie.
Muncie was founded in 1834 by a trader, John C. Birch, who had been sent by the American Fur Company to establish a trading post. The site was chosen because of its location on the confluence of the White River and Fall Creek, and because of the nearby Delaware Indian Village of Munsee Town. History of Muncie
Muncie is a city in East Central Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Delaware County and a part of the Muncie metropolitan area. The city’s name is an Algonquian word for “Great Spirit”.
In 1823, the Munsee Township was organized. The small village of Munsee Town was renamed Muncie in 1865 and incorporated as a city in 1868. Gas lights were installed in the streets of Muncie in 1887.
The Ball brothers, George and Elias, moved to Muncie in 1865 and established the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company. The Balls manufactured canning jars, fruit jars, and other glass items. They developed Fruit Jar Works, a subsidiary company. In 1884, the company was renamed Ball Brothers Glass Company and moved to a new factory. The company became the Ball Corporation in 1969 and is now the world’s largest manufacturer of recyclable metal packaging.
The city’s first library was established in 1865 and the first hospital was built in 1871. The first school building was completed in 1874.
Muncie became known as the “Gasoline Capital of the World” in the early 1900s. The city was home to several manufacturers of automobiles, engines, and other gaspowered products. The globalization of the automobile industry and a decline in the demand for gaspowered products led to the city’s loss of this title.
Muncie is the home of Ball State University, which was established in 1918. The university’s teams are known as the Cardinals. Muncie is also home to the Indianapolis Colts Grissom Training Center.
