History of Rantoul

The Village of Rantoul was incorporated in 1854. The first settlers in the Rantoul area were William and Catherine Busey, who arrived in 1822.

The Buseys were originally from Kentucky, and had migrated to Illinois in search of new opportunities. They settled in Champaign County, near the presentday site of the University of Illinois.

William Busey built the first log cabin in the Rantoul area. This cabin served as the family home, as well as a shelter for other settlers who were passing through the area.

The Buseys’ cabin became a wellknown landmark, and was known as “Busey’s Tavern.” This tavern was a popular stopping point for stagecoaches and other travelers.

In 1854, the Village of Rantoul was officially established. The village was named after Colonel Robert Rantoul, Jr., who was a prominent businessman and politician from Massachusetts.

Colonel Rantoul was instrumental in the development of the village, and helped to attract new businesses and settlers to the area.

The village continued to grow in the following years, and became a thriving community. Rantoul was home to several factories and businesses, as well as a growing number of families.

The village continued to prosper in the early 20th century. However, the Great Depression and World War II took a toll on the community.

Many of the factories and businesses in Rantoul closed their doors, and the population began to decline.

However, the village has made a comeback in recent years. New businesses have opened, and the population is slowly starting to increase.

Rantoul is once again a thriving community, and is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
