History of Aliquippa
In 1754, the area now known as Aliquippa was included in a plot of land 3,000 acres (1,214 hectares) large that was deeded to George Croghan. William McKee bought the land in 1769. He sold a portion of his plot to Queen Aliquippa, a local Native American leader, for $50. The land was known as “McKee’s Slashes” until Queen Aliquippa died in 1772. The name “Aliquippa” first appeared on a map of the area in 1785. In the early 1800s, Aliquippa was home to a log cabin tavern and stagecoach stop.
In 1822, the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad plans were made to build a main line through Aliquippa. Therailroad brought many new settlers to the area. The population of Aliquippa grew rapidly. In 1892, the B&O Railroad built a branch line from Aliquippa to Pittsburgh. The B&O railroad also helped to spur industrial growth in Aliquippa. Many new industries, including the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company, set up shop in Aliquippa. The population of Aliquippa continued to grow through the early 1900s.
In the 1920s, Aliquippa was one of the largest steelproducing cities in the world. The city reached its peak population in 1930 with over 36,000 residents. The Great Depression and the decline of the steel industry led to a decrease in population. By 1940, the population had fallen to just over 28,000. The population continued to decline through the second half of the 20th century. In 2000, the population of Aliquippa was 9,383.
