History of Ojai

Ojai was founded in 1874 by Nordhoff, a Chumash Indian village that was once home to the region’s native people. Spanish missionaries arrived in the 18th century, and the area was subsequently settled by ranchers and farmers. The city’s name comes from the Spanish word for “valley.”

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ojai became a popular resort destination for Hollywood celebrities and other luminaries. The Mount View Hotel, which opened in 1911, was a particularly popular destination.

During World War II, Ojai was the site of a Naval Air Facility. After the war, the facility was converted into a civilian airport, which operated until the 1970s.

Today, Ojai is a small city with a population of just over 7,000. It is known for its quaint downtown, art galleries, and golf courses.
