History of Los Angeles

Prior to Europeans arriving in the area that is now Los Angeles, the region was inhabited by the Tongva (or Gabrieleño) Native Americans for over 8,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive were members of the Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo expedition, which sailed from the mainland in 1542. However, it was not until 1602 that another expedition, led by Sebastian Vizcaino, arrived and put the area on maps of the world.

Los Angeles was officially founded in 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, and it became a part of Mexico in 1821 when Mexico won its independence from Spain. Los Angeles grew rapidly under Mexican rule, becoming a major commercial center for the region. However, in 1848, the United States annexed California as a result of the MexicanAmerican War, and Los Angeles became an American city.

The American period of Los Angeles history is marked by two significant events: the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1876 and the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. These two events helped to spur massive growth in the city, which became the largest city on the West Coast by 1920. The twentieth century also saw the rise of the Hollywood film industry, which made Los Angeles the global center of moviemaking.

Today, Los Angeles is one of the largest and most diverse cities in the United States. It is home to a global economy, a vibrant culture, and some of the most wellknown landmarks in the world.
