History of Barstow
In 1857, railroad surveyor Colonel Henry Washington put down his instruments in the high desert east of San Bernardino and announced to his survey team, “This is Barstow.” The 10th and last California mission, San Bernardino Asistencia, had been established 31 years before a few miles to the south. Years earlier, Spanish andMexican settlers in this remote reaches of the state found that prospectors mistakenly believed that the silver and copper from local mines was fool’s gold.
The first nonNative American settlers in what is now Barstow were members of the Mormon Battalion, recruited as part of the U.S. Army during the MexicanAmerican War. discharged in Los Angeles in 1847, many of the veterans remained in Southern California, and a few decided to head east across the Mojave Desert. In 1851, Mormon pioneer Isaac Hunt and his family became the first permanent settlers in the area, building an adobe home on the site of what is now the Pioneer Park Museum.
The circumstances of the founding of Barstow are reflected in its street grid. Main Street, running north and south, was originally laid out as water mains were installed to serve the new town. East and West Streets were added later, running perpendicular to Main Street at intervals of one block.
Barstow quickly became an important waypoint for travelers on the trail between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. In 1858, the Army established Fort Irwin a few miles to the north to protect Mormon settlers and other emigrants traveling through the area. ten years later, the Southern Pacific Railroad reached Barstow, solidifying the town’s role as a transportation hub.
The town continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the discovery of gold, silver, and other minerals in the surrounding hills and mountains.
