CocoaRockledge is a city in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 17,140 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm BayMelbourneTitusville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city is home to the Brevard Zoo and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
History
The area around Cocoa was first settled in 1858 by exConfederate Colonel Henry Titus. He named the town Rockledge after his ancestral home in Scotland. Titusville, the county seat of Brevard County, was incorporated in 1859.
In 1875, the Florida Legislature renamed the area Cocoa, and in 1895, incorporated the town of Cocoa. The city annexed Rockledge in 1945.
Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.0 square miles (57 km2), of which 21.6 square miles (56 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (1.8%) is water.
Cocoa is bordered by the cities of Rockledge, Cocoa West, and Cocoa East.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 15,040 people, 5,950 households, and 4,131 families residing in the city. The population density was 692.5 inhabitants per square mile (266.9/km2). There were 6,610 housing units at an average density of 305.8 per square mile (117.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 74.33% White, 19.29% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.27% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.09% of the population.
There were 5,950 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were nonfamilies. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,166, and the median income for a family was $46,571. Males had a median income of $35,978 versus $23,391 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,413. About 8.9% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.3% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.
Tourism
Each year, the city of Cocoa hosts the Space Coast Student Art Exhibition, the largest art show in Brevard County. The event is open to all public, private, and homeschooled students in grades six through twelve and is held at the Cocoa Riverfront Park.
The Brevard Zoo is located in Cocoa. The 75acre (30 ha) zoo houses over 650 animals representing 165 species from all over the world.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is located on Merritt Island, just north of Cocoa. The visitor complex offers tours of the Kennedy Space Center, rocket garden, IMAX theater, and much more.
The USS John F. Kennedy Memorial is located on the grounds of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The memorial honors President Kennedy and the crews of Apollo 11 and Apollo 8.

History of Cocoa-Rockledge
CocoaRockledge is a city in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 16,161 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm BayMelbourneTitusville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The area was originally inhabited by the Ais people. The first nonnative settlement in the area was by a family from Georgia in 1859. The family built a log cabin near the Indian River. A post office was established in 1862 with the name of “Cocoa House Landing”. In 1884, the St. Johns and Indian River Railroad arrived in the area and the town was renamed “Rockledge” after a nearby dock. In 1925, the city of Cocoa annexed Rockledge. The city’s name was changed to “CocoaRockledge” in 1926.
The city is home to several historical sites including the Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science, the Brevard Zoo, and the James infringement House.
In the early 21st century, the city’s population has been growing. The city’s economy is based on tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. The main tourist attractions in the city are the Brevard Zoo, the Brevard Museum of History & Natural Science, and the Manatee Observation and Education Center.
