Rutherford is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 18,061, reflecting an increase of 2,553 (+16.4%) from the 15,508 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,560 (+11.1%) from the 13,948 counted in the 1990 Census.
Rutherford was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on September 21, 1881, from portions of Union Township. It was reincorporated as a city on February 21, 1894. The city is named after John Rutherfurd, a 19thcentury U.S. Senator from New Jersey who owned property in the area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.28 square miles (8.51 km2), all of it land.
Rutherford is east of the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands and is oval in shape. The Upper Montclair section of Montclair is to the south, and the Passaic River forms the western border.
The city has two distinct downtowns, on either side of Park Avenue. The commercial section is located near train station and features many momandpop stores, as well as some national chain stores. Nearby is an industrial area that contains a number of office buildings and warehouses. The residential section is located on the northern side of town and features a mix of twofamily homes, singlefamily homes, and apartment buildings. Interstate 80, the major highway connecting Newark to the George Washington Bridge, runs along the southern edge of Rutherford. County Route 503 also passes through the city.
History of Rutherford
Rutherford,New Jersey was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans.In 1609, an English explorer named Henry Hudson came to the area and claimed it for the Dutch government.In 1664, the British took over the area and renamed it New Barbadoes, after the island of Barbados.In 1710, the British divided the area into four municipalities: Bergen, Hackensack, Pompton, and Saddle River.
Rutherford was originally part of Bergen township, but separated in 1881.It was named after John W. Rutherford, a New Jersey lawyer and politician. Rutherford is known as the “Borough of Trees” because of the large number of shade trees that line its streets.
The first European settlers in Rutherford were Dutch farmers who arrived in the 1660s. They built homes and farms along the Passaic River.In the early 1800s, Rutherford became a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers looking to escape the heat of the city. This led to the development of several large estates, including the Crane Estate and the Acker Estate.
The arrival of the Erie Railroad in 1848 made Rutherford a commuter town for New York City.Many of the large estates were converted into hotels and boarding houses to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Rutherford’s golden age came to an end with the Great Depression and World War II, but the borough has experienced a resurgence in recent years.
