History of Alamogordo

In the early 1800s, what is now the city of Alamogordo was part of Mexico. In 1846, the United States annexed the area as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the MexicanAmerican War. The village of Alamogordo was established in 1898 and formally incorporated as a city in 1912.

The name Alamogordo is derived from the Spanish words for “fat cottonwood”, referring to the nearby Rio Grande and the many cottonwood trees that grow along its banks. The first known use of the name Alamogordo was in 1909, in the form of “Alamogordo Camp”, a military installation established during the first year of the U.S. occupation of northern Mexico following the MexicanAmerican War.

The area around Alamogordo was settled by a mix of Hispanic and Anglo settlers in the late 19th century. The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to the establishment of several large military installations in the area, most notably the Alamogordo Army Air Field and the White Sands Proving Ground. During World War II, Alamogordo was the site of the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, where the first atomic bombs were detonated in 1945.

Postwar Alamogordo experienced rapid growth, primarily due to the influx of scientists and workers involved in the development of the nearby White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base. The city continued to grow throughout the latter part of the 20th century, eventually becoming one of the largest cities in southern New Mexico.

Today, Alamogordo is a thriving community with a diversified economy and a rich history. The city is home to several museums and historical sites, as well as a variety of businesses and industries. Alamogordo is also a popular tourist destination, offering a wide range of outdoor recreational activities and attractions.
