History of Raton
Raton is a city in northern New Mexico, United States. The city is the county seat of Colfax County and is located just south of the Colorado border. Raton is the commercial, industrial, educational, and medical center of a sixcounty area known as Northeast New Mexico. Raton has a mayorcouncil form of government. The current mayor is Neel Lane. Raton is notable as the site of Raton Pass, a historic route on the Santa Fe Trail.
In the early 1800s, what is now Raton was part of the Raton Land Grant made by the Spanish crown to Don Bartolome Baca, a wealthy landowner and rancher in the area. The town of Raton was established in August 1878 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached the site. A post office was established that same year. In February 1880, Raton was incorporated as a city.
For much of its early history, Raton was a frontier town, with a economy based on ranching and mining. The coal mining industry began in Raton in the late 19th century and continued into the 20th century. The Maxwell Land Grant, a large landownership grant made by the U.S. government in the 19th century, also fueled economic growth in Raton. The Grant was named for James S.
