History of Charlottesville
Founded in 1762, Charlottesville was the first planned city in the United States. Named for Charlotte of MecklenburgStrelitz, the queen consort of George III of Great Britain, the city was established at the intersection of three major thoroughfares. It quickly became a center of trade and a dominant town in the Virginia Piedmont region.
During the Revolutionary War, Charlottesville served as a haven for American troops, who were often on the run from the British. In 1781, Charlottesville was the site of one of the final battles of the war, the Battle of Charlottesville. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson chose Charlottesville as the site of the University of Virginia, which he founded.
The American Civil War began with the firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. On June 3, 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee led his army north into Virginia in an attempt to capture Washington, D.C. On July 5, the Confederate army reached Charlottesville. General Lee made his headquarters at the Spotswood Hotel in Charlottesville, where he stayed for three days.
On the morning of July 8, Union cavalry under General George A. Custer attacked Charlottesville in an attempt to capture General Lee. After a brief but fierce battle, the Union troops were forced to retreat. The Confederate army would go on to suffer a series of defeats, and Charlottesville would not see another battle until 1865.
