History of Asbury Park
Asbury Park is a city in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States, located on the Jersey Shore and part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 12,51, making it the state’s 16thlargest municipality.
The city was named for Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He founded the nearby city of Ocean Grove in 1869.
The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Lenape Native Americans. The Lenape lived in small villages along the rivers and streams that flow through the area, and fished, hunted, and gathered shellfish and natural fruits and vegetables.
The first European settlers of the area were Dutch farmers, who arrived in the early 1600s. In 1664, the English took control of the area from the Dutch, and it became part of the Colony of New Jersey.
