Gila Bend is a small city located in the southwestern part of the US state of Arizona. The city has a population of just over 3,000 people and is situated about 100 miles from the state capital of Phoenix. The city is named after the Gila River which flows nearby and was once an important stopover for travelers on the old western US highways.

The community of Gila Bend dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries established a Catholic mission in the area. The remains of the old mission church can still be seen in the city today.

History of Gila Bend
Gila Bend, Arizona is a small town located in Maricopa County. The town was founded in 1858 and is named after the Gila River which bends near the town site. The area was originally inhabited by the Hohokam people who were known for their extensive irrigation systems. The Hohokam people disappeared around 1450 AD and the area was subsequently uninhabited until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s. The Spanish established several missions in the area but they were all abandoned by the early 1800s.
In 1858, the U.S. Army established a fort in the area to protect settlers from hostile Native Americans. The fort was named after General John C. Fremont who was the first military governor of California. The town of Gila Bend grew up around the fort and became an important stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route which operated between 1858 and 1861.
During the American Civil War, the fort was briefly occupied by Confederate troops but it was quickly recaptured by Union forces. In 1864, a stagecoach station was built in Gila Bend and the town became an important stop on the San AntonioSan Diego Mail Line. The town also served as a base for the U.S. Camel Corps which operated in the southwestern desert from 1856 to 1863.
Gila Bend was incorporated as a town in 1901 and the following year the American Southwest was hit by a long drought. Many farmers in the area were forced to abandon their land and the population of Gila Bend declined sharply. In the 1920s, the town began to recover as the agricultural industry in the area began to grow again.
The population of Gila Bend peaked in the 1960s at around 2,000 but has declined since then. Today, the town is home to around 1,700 people. Gila Bend is still an important stop on several major highways and is also home to a number of historic sites.
