Englewood is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 27,147, reflecting an increase of 927 from the 26,220 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,353 from the 24,867 counted in the 1990 Census.
Englewood was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 17, 1899, from portions of Englewood Township. With the creation of the City of Englewood, Englewood Township was dissolved. An earlier referendum for city status in 1895 failed by a vote of772 to 195.

Englewood is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 27,147, reflecting an increase of 2,887 (+11.9%) from the 24,260 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 613 (+2.6%) from the 23,647 counted in the 1990 Census.
It has been a matter of some discussion as to whether or not Englewood was ever officially incorporated as a city. The United States Census Bureau recognizes it as a CDP within the town of Englewood Cliffs, which it shares with the neighboring village of Englewood Cliffs. However, local historians contend that it was in fact incorporated as a city in 1871, and thus predates the formation of Bergen County which did not occur until two years later.
Englewood was initially developed by John Jacob Astor as one of a string of communities along the newlybuilt Erie Rail Road, in the early 19th century. The borough’s street grid and housing stock still retains much of its 19th century character. The city’s main commercial thoroughfare, Palisade Avenue, still features many of the original houses built by Astor and his contemporaries.
One of the more noteworthy aspects of Englewood’s history is its role as a summer retreat for New York City’s wealthy elite, beginning in the late 1800s. Many of the grandest homes from this era still stand along streets such as Grand Avenue and East Palisade Avenue, and testify to the city’s oncevibrant social scene.
