History of Ecorse

The city of Ecorse is located in Wayne County, Michigan along the Detroit River. The area was first settled by FrenchCanadian fur traders in the early 1800s. The city was incorporated in 1855 and named after the Ecorse River, which was derived from the French word meaning “river of the Ottawa.”

The early years of the city were marked by industry and manufacturing. The Detroit, Toledo & Milwaukee Railroad came to the city in 1856, which helped to spur economic growth. The city’s population grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as waves of immigrants, mostly from Europe, came to the city in search of jobs in the factories.

The city began to decline in the mid20th century as the manufacturing jobs left the area. The city’s population peaked in 1960 at nearly 32,000, but has since declined to just over 9,000 as of the 2010 census. The city has struggled economically in recent years, filing for bankruptcy in 2013. However, there are signs of revitalization in the city, with new businesses and investment coming in.
