The first settlers in the area were mostly from New England and New York. They came to the area to farm and to escape the crowded cities. Many of the early settlers were abolitionists and helped slaves escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Norwood grew slowly in the early years. The population was only about 200 in 1850. But the city began to grow rapidly after the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad was built in 1868. This made Norwood an important shipping point for farm products and manufactured goods.
