Winsted is a city in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,321 at the 2010 census. Winsted is located in the northwest corner of the state, in the Litchfield Hills. It is about 30mi away from Hartford, the state capital, and about 60mi southwest of Boston.
Winsted has a lot of old architecture and history. The singescreen Gilbert Cinema, which originally opened in 1910, is one of the oldest movie theaters in continuous operation in the United States. The Warner Theater, which originally opened in 1931 as a vaudeville and movie theater, is now a live performance venue. Winsted is a city in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,321 at the 2010 census. Winsted is located in the Northwestern Connecticut region.
The area that is now Winsted was part of the town of Winchester until 1826. In 1806, the Dudley Watermill was built which helped to power the Patent process. The first factory in Winsted was the Winn Manufacturing Company and it made buttons from seashells. The Winsted Linen Company was established in 1834.
The City of Winsted was incorporated on June 15, 1850. The city was named after its founder, Isaac Winchester. The city became a major manufacturing center with over one hundred factories by 1912. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Warner Brothers Company began in Winsted and later moved to Hollywood, California.
The city began to decline in the mid20th century as manufacturing jobs left the region. The economy of the city has diversified in recent years.
Winsted is located in the western part of Litchfield County, in the Housatonic River Valley. It is bordered by the towns of Winchester to the north, Torrington to the south, Barkhamsted to the west, and New Hartford to the east.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.
There were 3,035 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were nonfamilies. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,219, and the median income for a family was $42,188. Males had a median income of $37,027 versus $25,625 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,867. About 10.4% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.5% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
