Burlington is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Vermont and the seat of Chittenden County. It is located 45 miles south of the Canada–United States border and 94 miles south of Montreal. The Burlington metropolitan area includes the three Vermont counties of Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle, and the New York counties of Clinton, Essex, and Warren. Burlington lies between Lake Champlain to the west and the Green Mountains to the east.
The city was first settled in 1641 by Samuel de Champlain as one of the many French colonies that dotted the northeastern part of North America. The French colony was ceded to Great Britain after the French and Indian War. A period of dispute followed over control of the area, which resulted in several wars, culminating in the American Revolutionary War when the Euros attempted to take control of the city. The Americans subsequently won the war and gained control of the city.
