History of Sweetwater
The first European settlers in the area now known as Sweetwater were a group of Catholic missionaries from Spain. They established a mission in the late 1600s and named it San Francisco de los Chamacos. The mission was located in an area inhabited by the Jumano people, who were friendly to the Spanish. The mission began to decline in the early 1800s, however, and was eventually abandoned.
In 1849, during the California Gold Rush, the area around the former mission was settled by American prospectors. A town was soon established and given the name Sweetwater. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s as more and more gold was found in the area. By the 1860s, Sweetwater was a thriving community with a population of several thousand.
The town declined in the 1870s, however, after many of the gold mines in the area were depleted. The population dwindled, and many of the town’s businesses closed. Sweetwater managed to survive, though, and by the early 1900s it was once again a thriving community.
Today, Sweetwater is a small city with a population of around 10,000. It is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, about 60 miles east of Sacramento. While it is no longer a booming goldmining town, it is still a pleasant place to live and visit.
