History of Orem
The city of Orem, Utah, is located about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City in the former Mormon pioneer settlement of Utah Valley. The name “Orem” is derived from the word “orem,” which means “mouth of a river” in the Ute Indian language.
Mormon pioneers arrived in the Utah Valley in 1847, led by Brigham Young. They settled in the small town of Provo, which became the first permanent white settlement in Utah. In the 1850s, other Mormon settlers began moving into the area, and by 1859 there were enough people living in the Utah Valley to form a separate county.
The county seat was originally located in the town of Provo, but in 1861 it was moved to the new town of Fillmore, which was located in the center of the county. In 1864, the county seat was moved again, this time to the town of Mt. Pleasant.
In the late 1860s, the Mormon settlers in the Utah Valley began to cooperate more with their Gentile (nonMormon) neighbors, and in 1870 the two groups formed a joint militia known as the “Utah Expedition.” This militia was responsible for protecting settlers from Indian attacks.
In 1871, the Mormons in the Utah Valley decided to build a new temple. The location they chose was in the northern part of the valley, near the presentday city of Orem. The temple was completed in 1877 and was named the Provo Utah Temple.
In 1884, the Mormon settlers in the Utah Valley built a second temple, this one located in the southern part of the valley in the presentday city of Salt Lake City. This temple was named the Salt Lake Temple.
In the early 1900s, the city of Orem was founded. The city was originally named Shunesburg, after one of the city’s founders, Isaac Shunesburg. However, in1904 the name was changed to Orem, after the nearby Mormon temple.
The city of Orem has a long history of cooperation between Mormons and Gentiles. This cooperation was evident in the early days of the city, when Mormons and Gentiles worked together to build the city’s first schoolhouse.
