History of West Point

West Point is a historic city located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, New York. It is the home of the United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point. The city takes its name from the geographical point where the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers meet.

Settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s, West Point was originally known as West End. In 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, it was occupied by the British and renamed Fort Clinton. The following year, after the Battle of Saratoga, the Continental Army under General Benedict Arnold occupied the fort. Arnold had been planning to betray the Revolutionaries to the British, but his plan was discovered and he was forced to flee. The fort was renamed in his honor.

After the war, West Point became an important strategic location. The area was used as a training ground for the new American army and became the site of the first U.S. Military Academy.
