History of Marion (Alabama)
Marion is a city in, and the county seat of, Perry County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was 3,686.[1]
The site of Marion was settled after the War of 1812 as a trading post named Polly’s Bluff. It was later renamed in honor of General Francis Marion of South Carolina, the “Swamp Fox”. Marion became the county seat of Perry County in 1819.[2]
Marion began to grow in the 1830s and 1840s as a center of trade for cotton and other agricultural products. The arrival of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in 1852 led to further growth.
The city was severely damaged during the American Civil War, when it was occupied alternately by Union and Confederate forces and subjected to raids by Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest. After the war, Marion slowly began to rebuild.
In the early 20th century, Marion became known as the “Hub City” because of its central location in Perry County and the surrounding region. The city has since continued to grow and prosper.
Marion has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The city is best known as the home of General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a controversial figure in the American Civil War.
