History of Phoenix

The history of Phoenix, Arizona is rich and diverse. First inhabited by the Hohokam people centuries ago, the city has seen a number of different cultures and groups pass through over the years. From the Spanish explorers who first arrived in the area in the 1500s, to the American troops who occupied the city during the Civil War, Phoenix has been witness to some of the most pivotal moments in American history.

The Hohokam people were the first to settle in the area that would become Phoenix, and they did so around 300 BCE. The Hohokam were a peaceful and industrious people, and they built a thriving society in the desert. They were known for their expert irrigation techniques, and their villages were some of the most advanced in North America.

The Hohokam people disappeared around 1450 CE, and it is still not entirely clear why. It is speculated that a combination of climate change and warfare led to their demise. After the Hohokam, a number of different groups occupied the area, including the Apache and the Navajo.

The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Spanish explorers, who came in the 1500s in search of gold and silver. They did not find the riches they were hoping for, but they did establish a number of missions in the area. One of the most wellknown is the San Xavier del Bac Mission, which was founded in 1699 and is still standing today.

American troops first arrived in Phoenix during the Civil War. The city was occupied by Confederate troops during the early part of the war, but it was quickly seized by Union forces in 1862. Phoenix would remain under Union control for the rest of the war.

After the war, Phoenix began to grow rapidly. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1881, and its population continued to swell in the following decades. This growth was largely due to the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century.

The 20th century was a time of great change for Phoenix. The city underwent a massive population growth in the 1920s and 1930s, due in part to the arrival of a number of new industries. During World War II, Phoenix was an important training ground for American troops.

The latter half of the 20th century saw Phoenix become a major metropolitan city. In 1968, it became the first city in the American Southwest to reach a population of one million. Today, Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona and the fifth largest city in the United States.
