History of Camden (Arkansas)

The city of Camden, Arkansas is located in the southern part of the state, about 30 miles from the ArkansasLouisiana border. The city was founded in 1836 by John Blade, a planter from Kentucky. The city was named after Camden, Kentucky. The city was incorporated in 1839.

The city’s early growth was due to the timber industry and river traffic. The city was a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War. The Union Army shelled the city in 1864 in an attempt to take control of the Arkansas River. The city was captured by Union forces in 1865.

After the War, the city’s economy declined. The city did not experience much growth until the construction of the Arkansas Louisiana Military Railroad in 1901. The railroad connected the city to Shreveport, Louisiana. The city’s economy improved due to the railroad and timber industries.

The city continued to grow in the 20th century. The city’s population peaked in the 1960s. The city began to decline in the 1970s as the timber industry declined. The city’s population has decreased since the 1990s. The city had a population of 10,017 in 2010.
