Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is a young city in a old land. The area now known as Anchorage was first settled by the Dena’ina people around 1000 AD. In the early 1900s, Alaska was a wild frontier and people were drawn to its promise of adventure and riches. Anchorage was founded in 1914 as a tent city by members of the Ship CreeknearBirch Creek mining camp. In 1915, the U.S. government designated Anchorage as the new territorial capital.
During World War II, Anchorage became a critical military staging area and grew rapidly. The construction of the Alaska Highway and military bases contributed to its growth. Today, Anchorage is a modern, cosmopolitan city and the commercial, cultural, and transportation hub of Alaska. It is home to nearly 300,000 people, over half of the state’s population. The name Anchorage was first used in print in 1915 by construction engineer and surveyor Edgar C. Bain. He used the word to describe the area around the Ship CreekBirch Creek mining camp, where he was working on a rail project. The word Anchorage comes from the Dena’ina word ancagag, meaning “the place where something is tied up or anchored.”
Anchorage has a long and rich history. The area was first settled by the Dena’ina people, who have lived in the area for over 10,000 years. The Dena’ina were a nomadic people, moving around the region following the food sources. In the winter, they would move to the Chugach Mountains to hunt for caribou.
