History of Valdez
In the early 1860s, prospectors arrived in the area searching for gold. Permanent settlement didn’t occur until 1898, when gold was discovered at Egg Creek. more than $30 million in gold was mined from Valdez Creek and nearbygot Slideshow Mineral Creek. This led to a population boom, and by 1899 the town of Valdez had more than 4,000 residents.
A devastating avalanche in 1900 wiped out part of the town, but Valdez quickly rebuilt. In 1903, the Valdez townsite was surveyed and laid out. That same year, the Alaska Road Commission began construction of a wagon road from Valdez to Eagle, which would eventually become the Richardson Highway.
The completion of the highway in 1918 made Valdez more accessible and spurred growth. The construction of the Pipeline in the 1970s brought even more people and money to Valdez.
Today, Valdez is a modern town with a population of just over 4,000 people. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, and is home to the oldest standing building in Alaska, St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church.
