History of Miles City
Miles City is a city in and the county seat of Custer County, Montana, United States. The population was 5,286 at the 2010 census. The city is named for General Nelson A. Miles who fought in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Miles City was founded in 1876 by Nelson Miles and Frank Ziegeist. It was officially incorporated in 1887. The city grew quickly due to the Miles Outpost and Fort Keogh. Fort Keogh was an army post established in 1877 to protect settlers from Native American attacks. The fort was named for Major Marcus Reno, who was killed during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Outpost and Fort Keogh were the primary economic drivers for Miles City for many years.
The Northern Pacific Railroad reached Miles City in 1881 and the Milwaukee Road in 1910. These railroads brought people and goods into Miles City and helped the city to grow.
The city reached its peak population in 1960 with nearly 10,000 people. However, the population has declined since then. The economy of Miles City is now based on tourism, ranching, and education.
