History of Burlington (New Jersey)
The township of Burlington was first created in 1677. At that time, it included the area that is now Burlington City, as well as the adjacent Borough of Florence. The township was named after the town of Bridlington in Yorkshire, England.
The town of Burlington was incorporated as a city in 1733. During the American Revolution, Burlington was an important military base for the Continental Army. In 1778, the Continental Army established a hospital in Burlington to care for wounded soldiers.
After the war, Burlington became a prosperous shipping and manufacturing center. Burlington was an early adopter of the steamboat, and the first steamboat to operate on the Delaware River was the Burlington, built in Burlington in 1809.
