History of Uniontown
Uniontown, Pennsylvania is located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. The city sits at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by the Delaware (Lenape) Native Americans.
The first Europeans to settle in the area were Swedish and Dutch farmers who arrived in the early eighteenth century. These early settlers established farms and mills along the rivers. In 1769, a group of English settlers from Maryland founded a town called Brownsville at the site of presentday Uniontown.
Brownsville quickly became an important trade center, due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers. It also became a popular destination for westwardbound settlers. In 1774, a road was built between Brownsville and Cumberland, Maryland, which increased trade and travel through the town.
During the Revolutionary War, Brownsville served as a supply base for the Continental Army. In 1781, General George Washington stayed in the town on his way to Yorktown, Virginia to fight the British.
After the war, Brownsville continued to grow. In 1786, the town was renamed Uniontown, in honor of the unity of the newly formed United States of America. In the early nineteenth century, Uniontown became an important stop on the National Road, which connected Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois.
Today, Uniontown is the county seat of Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
