With an estimated population of 87,443 in 2012, it is the secondlargest city in Arkansas after Little Rock and the principal city of the Fort Smith, ArkansasOklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area, a region of 298,592 residents which encompasses the Arkansas counties of Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian, and the Oklahoma counties of Le Flore and Sequoyah.

History of Fort Smith
The city of Fort Smith, Arkansas is located in the western part of the state on the ArkansasOklahoma border. It is the second largest city in the state with a population of 86,209 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1817 as a military fort named after General Thomas Adams Smith. It was occupied by the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was the site of two battles. After the war, the fort was decommissioned and the city became a trading post for buffalo hunters and Indian traders. In 1881, the city was designated as the county seat of Sebastian County. Fort Smith became a major stop on the MissouriPacific Railroad and the “Gateway to the West”. The city developed rapidly during the 1880s and 1890s with the construction of several commercial buildings, including the U.S. Courthouse and Jail, which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1896, the city was named the “Fort Smith Metropolis” and had a population of 8,008. It was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a foundry, three newspapers, four churches, and several schools. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century with the discovery of natural gas reserves in the 1920s and the construction of the OzarkJeta Pipeline in 1930. The construction of Interstate 40 in the 1960s connecting Fort Smith to Oklahoma City and Memphis brought further economic development to the city.
