Fort Smith is a city in Arkansas with a population of just over 86,000 people. It is the county seat of Sebastian County and is situated along the ArkansasOklahoma border. The city has a rich history that is evident in its many museums and historical buildings. Fort Smith is also home to two of the nation’s largest corporations, Tyson Foods and J.B. Hunt Transport Services. The city’s location makes it a popular destination for outdoor recreation, as it is situated in the Ozarks and near several large lakes.

Fort Smith is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The city is the county seat of Sebastian County. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 86,209. With an estimated population of 87,443 in 2012, it is the secondlargest city in Arkansas after Little Rock and the principal city of the Fort Smith, ArkansasOklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area, a region of 298,592 residents which encompasses the Arkansas counties of Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian, and the Oklahoma counties of Le Flore and Sequoyah.

Fort Smith lies on the ArkansasOklahoma state line, situated at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers, also known as Belle Point. The city began as a western frontier military post in 1817 and would later become well known for its role as a judge advocate general’s office during the westward expansion of the United States. In 2007, Forbes ranked Fort Smith as the 18thfastest growing small city in the United States.

There are many historical landmarks in Fort Smith, making it a popular tourist destination. Notable among them is Fort Smith National Historic Site, which preserves the remaining structures of the second fort, built in 1838 to house the U.S. Army’s Fifth Infantry Regiment and the U.S. Dragoons. The forts were named after thenColonel Thomas Stevenson Smith, who was killed in May 1817 during the First Seminole War at the Battle of Nepahatchie in Florida. The site of the first fort is now a Arkansas Landmark and state park, Historic Washington State Park. Fort Smith’s other historic sites include the Belle Grove Historic District, the Fort Smith Museum of History, the Judge Isaac C. Parker Federal Building and Courtroom, and the Masonic Temple. History of Fort Smith

The city of Fort Smith, Arkansas is located in the western part of the state on the ArkansasOklahoma border. It is the second largest city in the state with a population of 86,209 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1817 as a military fort named after General Thomas Adams Smith. It was occupied by the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was the site of two battles. After the war, the fort was decommissioned and the city became a trading post for buffalo hunters and Indian traders. In 1881, the city was designated as the county seat of Sebastian County. Fort Smith became a major stop on the MissouriPacific Railroad and the “Gateway to the West”. The city developed rapidly during the 1880s and 1890s with the construction of several commercial buildings, including the U.S. Courthouse and Jail, which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1896, the city was named the “Fort Smith Metropolis” and had a population of 8,008. It was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a foundry, three newspapers, four churches, and several schools. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century with the discovery of natural gas reserves in the 1920s and the construction of the OzarkJeta Pipeline in 1930. The construction of Interstate 40 in the 1960s connecting Fort Smith to Oklahoma City and Memphis brought further economic development to the city. Today, Fort Smith is a regional center for healthcare, education, and business. It is home to the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, Mercy Hospital, and a number of corporate headquarters, including ABF Freight, Rheem Manufacturing, and ArcBest Technologies.
