History of Tucson

Tucson, Arizona, is the second largest city in the state with a population of just over 520,000 residents. The city is home to the University of Arizona and is a popular destination for retirees. The city has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1775 by Spanish missionaries.

The area around Tucson was first inhabited by the Hohokam people, who were known for their irrigation systems and their pottery. The Hohokam lived in the area for centuries before disappearing around 1450. It is believed that the Hohokam were the first to cultivate the Sonoran Desert.

In the late 1600s, the area around Tucson was claimed by Spain and became a part of the Spanish Empire. Spanish missionaries soon arrived in the area and established the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1692. The mission was a success and soon other missions and settlements were established in the area.

Tucson officially became a town in 1775 when it was designated a presidio, or military fort. The town continued to grow and prospered as a stop on the Santa FeLos Angeles Road. However, the town was frequently attacked by Apache Indians and was even abandoned for a time in the 1830s.

Tucson finally became a city in 1877 and began to grow rapidly. The arrival of the railroad in 1880 helped to spur the city’s growth even further. The city quickly became a major center for commerce and trade.

Today, Tucson is a vibrant and thriving city. It is home to a diverse population and is a popular tourist destination. The city is also home to a number of historical sites and landmarks.
