History of Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a city located in northern Arizona, in the southwestern United States. It is the county seat of Coconino County. The city is named after a flagpole made from a ponderosa pine tree that was erected by a group of settlers in 1876, who also used the tree to fly an American flag during a celebration of the country’s centennial.

The area around Flagstaff was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Havasupai, Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo. The first European settlers in the area were members of the Mormon Church, who established a small community in 1855.

In 1876, the flagpole was erected and the American flag was flown in a celebration of the country’s centennial. The event was memorialized in a painting by William Henry Jackson, which now hangs in the Flagstaff City Hall.

In 1891, the Arizona Territorial Legislature voted to make Flagstaff the county seat of Coconino County. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century, due in part to the establishment of the Lowell Observatory in 1928 and the development of the Grand Canyon Highway (now Interstate 40) in the 1930s.

Today, Flagstaff is a thriving city with a population of over 70,000. It is home to a number of colleges and universities, as well as a number of tourist attractions, such as the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Meteor Crater.
