History of Texarkana
Founded in 1873 on the junction of two railroads, Texarkana grew rapidly due to its strategic location and became an important commercial center for the region. The city’s name comes from the fact that it is located on the TexasArkansas border. In 1874, the first of several post offices were established in Texarkana and the city was incorporated in 1876.
The growth of Texarkana was spurred by the arrival of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad in 1873 and the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1874. These railroads made Texarkana an important regional center for trade and commerce. The city’s population grew from just over 1,000 in 1880 to nearly 8,000 by 1900.
