History of Petoskey
Petoskey is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan and acts as a popular tourist destination. It is also the county seat of Emmet County. Petoskey was founded in 1879 byrum running and logging magnate, Benjamin Boutell. The city was named after Chief Petosegay of the Odawa tribe, who befriended Boutell and his men during their stay in the area.
Petoskey’s history is closely intertwined with that of the surrounding area, which was first populated by Native Americans. The Odawa tribe made their home in the area for centuries before the first Europeans arrived in the early 1800s. The Native Americans were soon followed by missionaries, fur trappers, and traders, who opened up the area for settlement. In 1847, the first permanent white settlement was established in the village of Bear River.
In the late 19th century, the area began to attract more tourists, drawn by the beauty of the area and the possibility of hunting and fishing. Several large hotels were built to accommodate the influx of visitors. In 1879, Benjamin Boutell platted the village of Petoskey and established a sawmill there. The village soon grew and became the county seat in 1882.
In the early 20th century, the resort industry began to decline, replaced by manufacturing and agriculture as the main sources of income for the area. Petoskey remained a small town until the 1950s, when it began to experience a period of growth and expansion. New businesses and residences were built, and the population increased. Today, Petoskey is a vibrant city with a thriving economy and a rich history.
