History of Bemidji
Bemidji, Minnesota is a city located in northcentral Minnesota, United States. It is the county seat of Beltrami County, and home to Minnesota State University Bemidji. The city has a population of 14,301, making it the largest commercial center in northern Minnesota.
The Bemidji area was first settled in 1866 by a group of Swedish American immigrants. The city was originally named “Björneby,” after one of the settlers, but was later renamed to “Bemidji” after Chief Bemidji of the local Ojibwe tribe. The chief was known for his friendship with the settlers, and helped them to survive in the harsh northern climate.
