History of Oxford
Founded in 1837, Oxford is one of the oldest cities in Mississippi. It was named after the British university city of Oxford in hope of having a similar educational institution established in the growing town. Although this never materialized, Oxford did become home to the University of Mississippi, nicknamed Ole Miss, in 1848. Today, the city’s economy is largely driven by the university, as well as tourism related to its notable literary and musical heritage.
In the early 1800s, what is now known as Oxford was part of a large tract of land purchased by the United States from the Chickasaw Nation. The Mississippi Legislature created Lafayette County in 1836, and Oxford was chosen as its county seat. The city was platted in 1837 by John Campbell, who also donated the land for the university.
The university was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1844, but it was not until six years later that it finally opened its doors. The Civil War put a temporary halt to the school’s operations, but it reopened in 1865 and has been growing ever since.
Today, the University of Mississippi is the state’s largest university, with a enrollment of over 24,000 students. It is also a major research institution, with over 100 centers and institutes. The university’s sports teams, particularly its football team, are also a big draw for the city.
