History of New Ulm
New Ulm, Minnesota is a city in Brown County in the United States. It is located on the Minnesota River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, upstream from the confluence with the Des Moines River. The city lies at the center of the New Ulm micropolitan area, which consists of all of Brown County, and is part of the Mankato–North Mankato metropolitan area. New Ulm is the county seat of Brown County. The city’s German heritage is celebrated each year with Oktoberfest. New Ulm was founded in 1854 by German immigrants, who were seeking religious freedom and Cheap land. Many of the settlers were from the Adelsverein, which had established several settlements in Texas, but the society was unable to establish a lasting colony in that state. Some of these settlers also founded the town of Fredericksburg, Texas.
In 1857, the town was renamed New Ulm in honor of the city of Ulm in the Kingdom of Württemberg, Germany. That same year, New Ulm was named the county seat. The town’s newspaper, the Radical, was founded in 1858. The town was incorporated as a city in 1873. The Milford Township area south and west of town was plotted and renamed “South New Ulm” in 1856; it incorporated as the village of South New Ulm in 1858, and was renamed simply “New Ulm” in 1896 when it merged with the city.
During the Dakota War of 1862, the town was attacked by a Sioux war party on August 19, 1862. A small detachment of soldiers stationed in the town managed to hold off the Sioux attackers until reinforcements arrived the following day. The town was again attacked on September 23, but the Sioux were repelled by the improved defenses. The town maintained a garrison of troops until November 1862. New Ulm was not burned in the Dakota War of 1862, as were many other towns in Minnesota.
New Ulm is home to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, which honors individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the musical culture of Minnesota. The city is also home to the Hermann Monument, a 126foot (38 m) statue of Hermann the Cheruscan, erected in 1897 to commemorate the victory of Germanic tribes led by Arminius over Roman legions in the Battle of the Teutoberg Forest in 9 AD. New Ulm is located at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota State Highway 15.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.52 square miles (29.92 km2), of which 11.37 square miles (29.44 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2) is water. The total area is 1.32% water. New Ulm is situated in the Minnesota River Valley, surrounded by high bluffs.
As of the census of 2010, there were 13,522 people, 5,594 households, and 3,462 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,196.5 inhabitants per square mile (461.4/km2). There were 5,902 housing units at an average density of 519.8 per square mile (200.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.0% White, 1.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 5,594 households of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.9% were nonfamilies. 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
The median age in the city was 39.2 years. 24.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.9% were from 25 to 44; 26.8% were from 45 to 64; and 16.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.5% male and 52.5% female.
In 2018, the estimated median income for a household in the city was $50,268. The per capita income for the city was $23,422
