History of Scranton
Scranton is the sixthlargest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is the county seat and largest city of Lackawanna County in Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley and hosts a branch of the University of Pennsylvania. With a population of 77,291, it is the largest city in the Scranton–WilkesBarre–Hazleton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of about 570,000. The city is the center of a densely populated area with a total population of about half a million people.
The city was incorporated on February 14, 1856, as a borough in Luzerne County and as a city on April 23, 1866. It became a major industrial city, a center of mining and railroads, and attracted waves of European immigrants to its anthracite coal mines in the 19th century. It reached its height as one of America’s most prosperous cities during the first half of the 20th century, when its population peaked at around 140,000 people. Following World War II, however, it lost much of its industrial base and fell into hard times. Several revitalization efforts have taken place since including: the Lace Market Historic District downtown, the Iron Triangle Historic District near downtown, the Scranton State School for the Deaf, and the Carrie Furnaces.
